About 5 years ago, when my inflammation was at it's worst, every part of my body was inflamed. At the time, I was on a very therapeutic ant-inflammatory diet, one that also supported my digestion. It was a year of deep self care.
Intuitively I knew that I needed something first thing in the morning before breakfast. So this is when I would have this tea. And because my husband's extremely supportive, he drank it everyday with me.
Because my inflammation was so intense, it took almost a year for me to make it to the other side. Although this tea was a savor for me in many ways, it took a lot of dedication, tools, support and changing of old habits to make it to get where I sit today.
So although there was a lot I did over the course of a year to deeply heal myself, this tea became part of my routine, new habits and healthy rituals. It became a symbol of my dedication to myself and as long as I started my day with this tea, I felt empowered to do the rest.
After the year, I became pregnant again and what my body needed changed. I continued to drink this tea every now and then but my ritual in the morning fell away... mostly because of morning sickness, really bad morning sickness.
My husband and I were talking the other day and this tea came up. How does this happen you ask? Basically because I talk a lot about food. Because I love food. A lot.

Before I share the recipe for this super simple tea, I want to mention how these ingredients work in harmony and bring a soothing punch (is that even a thing? A soothing punch?).
Lemon is very alkalizing when ingested and is a powerful tool when trying to combat inflammation, because inflammation cannot exist in an alkaline environment. Turmeric is a spice that comes in the form of a root and has a powerful kick in soothing inflammation in the body. Actually, it's more than turmeric... it's really the active ingredient called the curcumin. The coconut oil (or other fat) is necessary for the absorption of curcumin as it's fat soluable. So if you're taking turmeric without a fat which helps it get where it needs to go, you're wasting your time.
As for the cayenne, it's just a pinch but it round this tea out beautifully. Cayenne is also a thermagenic which helps to support a healthy metabolism. And the raw honey, although optional and minimal, takes this tea to the next level.
A note about honey: if you are going to use raw honey in this drink, or any drink for that matter, don't ever add it to hot water. By doing so, you kill all the medicinal benefits that honey has to offer, turning it into almost straight frustose and taking from a live food, rich in enzymes, vitamins, minerals and antioxidant (along with SO much more), to a dead food. And when you're using a food for therapeutic purposes, make sure you get the most out of it. In this tea, use luke warm water, just warm enough to melt your coconut oil. Once it's a room temperature, add your honey. Raw honey is, in my opinion, one of the top super foods that promote health in the body. Seriously. So never heat it and reap the benefits.

- 1/2 lemon, juiced
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
- pinch cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp raw honey, optional
- warm water
- In a mug, add all ingredients, except honey, and fill with warm water.
- Once water has cooled and become room temperature, add honey.
- Stir and enjoy.
